BeTheChange May 2006

The following notes are in short form and not meant to be a report. It will be useful to attendees of BeTheChange 2006 and may stimulate ideas in others.

* indicates personal thoughts/notes

John Whitmore

Capitalism doesn't work. Is it wrong? Is it flawed?

3 richest people have more wealth than the bottom 600,000,000. If one feeds a horse enough oats, some will pass through to the sparrows: J. K. Galbraith.

40,000 people per day die from starvation.

There are more slaves today than 200 years ago.

Be judgemental, with compassion – Dalai Lama. Be inclusive. Critical thinking.

“Reformed sinners” ... Gates, Soros, ...

* JW's comments are a useful wake up call but do not recognise that the problem is without the system and that money may be a proxy for ethics which we have to choose. Money itself is not the problem. Relative to history these benchmarks may not be so divergent eg a pharaoh had everyone beneath him and many of them were slaves.

John Duggan

Gazeley (WalMart).

“Servant leadership”

Not impressed.

Oneearth.org the power of one. Great video

John Wallis

Don't measure GDP, measure wealth.

We're still talking about money!

Because the oil price is rising, change is motivated ...!

We're currently consuming 1.2 planets. If we raise wealth in developing countries to the same level as the UK we'd consume 3 planets, and if to the same level as the US we'd consume 5 planets. To raise the minimum consumption of all people to $ 3 per day while maintaining the current income distribution, we'd consume 15 planets. We can not grow ourselves out of the problems of poverty and inequality.

Well being has a low correlation with increasing wealth, and a huge correlation with relationships and being valued. People with high levels of well-being have life expectancy increase of 7 years.

Education works if experiential and team based.

Bernard Lietaer

Intentional economics.

* Astraea: framework with language analysing what is and should be: applying integral thinking to economics.

Intentional economics, * incorrectly, blames the money system: “we are programmed by our money system”.

Room for improvement?: business and investment leaders sit around, often during presentations, talking to each other. Not interacting with others that could benefit from their interest, support and encouragement. In fact behaving like traditional leaders!

Sure there are increasing choices, but this is what successful leaders/capitalists say to justify their behavior.

EPRIDA

Climate change: spike today if time scale is 1,000 or 450,000 years.

Peak oil is a denial of information like that of the tobacco companies.

Soil is depleted and needs life.

Historical evidence from story of Caspar de Carbahal and Francesco de Correleana. Cities with permaculture. No stones, just compacted earth.

10% addition of low temperature charcoal. Terro Preto do Indio.

* “Do it in China” because it is not controlled and low cost.

Also carbon is sequestered.

* Make micro-decentralised units. 10 ton units. Talk to Chinese forest guy?!

Biomimicry needed. Conventional economics is linear not cyclical.

Also comment on Terra.

Dollar collapse: Robert Reuben Chair of Citibank, Paul Volker, Paul Stigliz, Paul Krugman, Bundesbank, Lietaer.

* TPB: energy is the currency. money is metaphysical. It is a concept. A virtual reality. The value of energy (as in E=mc2) It represents an exchange of energy in a quantum way which is why change is our individual responsibility. I believe that to bring human behaviour into line with natural law biomimicry is essential. Does this not suggest that our currency must become energy?

Rhythms of everything. Cosmic rhythms. Cosmic energies. Changing energies of creation

Pre-Colomian culture. Written and preserved. Classic period 0 – 900 CE then to 1300; Spanish arrival in 1526 resulted in decline. Few records left, and a living tradition survived in Guatemala.

Structure:

13 heavens and 9 underworlds: periods of time. Each of 9 transformation periods are made up of 13 energy filters.

Time periods: tun = 360 days kin = 1 day, 20 days = vinal ... factors of 20. Not astronomical. designed to model the evolution of consciousness.

No “time”. Stoneage people thinking in terms of billions of years created the model.

13 underworlds of this heaven:
