{"id":859,"date":"2009-06-25T09:40:04","date_gmt":"2009-06-25T09:40:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/astraea.net\/blog\/?p=859"},"modified":"2009-06-25T09:40:04","modified_gmt":"2009-06-25T09:40:04","slug":"sharks-becoming-extinct-because-of-overfishing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/sharks-becoming-extinct-because-of-overfishing\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharks becoming extinct because of overfishing."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest report from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iucn.org\/\">International Union for Conservation of Nature<\/a>.\u00a0 This is the first time that IUCN Red List criteria, considered the world&#8217;s most comprehensive inventory of the conservation status of plants and animals, have been used to classify open ocean, or pelagic, sharks and rays.<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 0pt none; margin: 0px;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newsimg.bbc.co.uk\/media\/images\/45968000\/jpg\/_45968527_007512035-1.jpg?resize=226%2C170\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Oceanic whitetip shark\" hspace=\"0\" vspace=\"0\" width=\"226\" height=\"170\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Red list gives the status of 64 types of shark and ray, over <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/science\/nature\/8117378.stm\">30% of which are threatened with extinction<\/a>.\u00a0 The authors, IUCN&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/cmsdata.iucn.org\/downloads\/ssg_pelagic_report_final.pdf\">Shark Specialist Group<\/a>, say a main cause is overfishing.\u00a0 Listed as endangered are two species of hammerhead shark, often subject to &#8220;finning&#8221; &#8211; a practice of removing the fins and throwing away the body.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you don&#8217;t go near the sea, you might think that fewer sharks is a good thing.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s not.\u00a0 It upsets the balance of nature and destroys the marine ecosystem.\u00a0 And when large creatures are threatened it is a sign that humanity&#8217;s habitat is further degraded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The latest report from International Union for Conservation of Nature.\u00a0 This is the first time that IUCN Red List criteria, considered the world&#8217;s most comprehensive inventory of the conservation status of plants and animals, have been used to classify open ocean, or pelagic, sharks and rays.
