In Western and Central Europe, military spending increased at a much slower rate than in any other part of the world, while the US accounted for 58% of the global increase during the decade.<\/p>\n<p>The spending is of the same order of magnitude as the bailout of the global financial system, but of course does not go in to productive assets.<\/p>\n<p><!-- S IIMA --><\/p>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/newsimg.bbc.co.uk\/media\/images\/45915000\/gif\/_45915467_military_spending_map_466_newcolours.gif?resize=466%2C304\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Military spending by region\" hspace=\"0\" vspace=\"0\" width=\"466\" height=\"304\" \/><\/div>\n<p><!-- E IIMA --><\/p>\n<div class=\"ch1\"><strong>PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Offensive spending dwarfs peacekeeping operations.\u00a0 In 2008, a record 187,586 people were deployed on peacekeeping missions, an 11% rise over 2007.
