{"id":654,"date":"2009-02-19T22:22:46","date_gmt":"2009-02-19T22:22:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/astraea.net\/blog\/?p=654"},"modified":"2009-03-10T22:47:27","modified_gmt":"2009-03-10T22:47:27","slug":"nationalisation-deglobalisation-communism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/nationalisation-deglobalisation-communism\/","title":{"rendered":"Nationalisation, deglobalisation &#8230; Communism?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not yet.\u00a0 But the hasty reaction to economic problems may become more self-destructive than necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly moves to nationalise banks have been necessary to hold the global financial system &#8220;together&#8221;.\u00a0 And there has been a fall in trade as consumption has faltered.\u00a0 But the increasing popular call for government involvement and deglobalisation is dangerous and inappropriate. <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"government control\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.astraea.net\/holonics\/magazine\/images\/2009\/governmentcontrol.gif?resize=240%2C271\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"271\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is dangerous because it results in bad decisions, such as the gross protectionism afforded the banks here in Ireland.\u00a0 Some \u20ac 7 billion has been pumped in to two banks that could have been sold to private investors.\u00a0 Now we will face tax increases.\u00a0 The banks still fail to finance businesses.\u00a0 And those executives who failed are still being rewarded.\u00a0 If they had been sold, the government budget would not be so bad and there might be some professional discipline in the board room.<\/p>\n<p>It is inappropriate because we live in a global world.\u00a0 The technlogy that allows us to enjoy free video telephony unifes humanity.\u00a0 The\u00a0 industry that extracts the oil that fuels our food, transport and heat is a global franchise.\u00a0 The pollution of air and water is a global phenomenon. Humanity&#8217;s footprint is global.\u00a0 We must manage ourselves at the global level.<\/p>\n<p>But we must manage ourselves at the community level too.\u00a0 It has been too easy to fob-off our responsibilities to national governments and exist in a sterile world of PDAs, planes, cars, fashion, cosmetics and fantasy food.\u00a0 We must live in our communities and be involved in them.\u00a0 That is communism with a small &#8220;c&#8221;.\u00a0 Nationalisation and deglobalisation can all too easily lead to Communism with a big &#8220;C&#8221;, and that&#8217;s a big step backwards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/world\/international\/displaystory.cfm?story_id=13145370\">Turning their backs on the world<\/a> by the Economist.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not yet.\u00a0 But the hasty reaction to economic problems may become more self-destructive than necessary.
