{"id":56,"date":"2007-09-25T10:31:57","date_gmt":"2007-09-25T10:31:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/astraea.net\/blog\/?p=56"},"modified":"2007-09-25T10:31:57","modified_gmt":"2007-09-25T10:31:57","slug":"where-are-the-green-taxes-going","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/where-are-the-green-taxes-going\/","title":{"rendered":"Where are the green taxes going?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the UK, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taxpayersalliance.com\/\">Taxpayers&#8217; Alliance<\/a> has claimed that the government is raising billions of pounds more in green taxes than it needs to remove the UK&#8217;s &#8220;carbon footprint&#8221;.\u00a0 In a report they say that emissions in 2005 had done damage worth an estimated \u00a311.7 billion (covering the &#8220;social cost&#8221; of climate change to the world, such as weather changes and related disasters), but green taxes and charges in that year had been \u00a321.9 billion.\u00a0 It claims that\u00a0 ministers are &#8220;cynically&#8221; raising revenue rather than using the money to improve the environment. The group says that, on average, UK households were &#8220;over-paying&#8221; \u00a3400 a year and fuel duty and vehicle excise duty were between 30 and 40 times higher than the level needed to cover estimates of the social cost of CO2 emissions.
