{"id":380,"date":"2008-03-30T22:43:24","date_gmt":"2008-03-30T22:43:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/astraea.net\/blog\/?p=380"},"modified":"2008-03-30T22:43:24","modified_gmt":"2008-03-30T22:43:24","slug":"bt-notes-march-a-fun-and-busy-spring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/bt-notes-march-a-fun-and-busy-spring\/","title":{"rendered":"BT notes &#8211; March &#8211; a fun and busy spring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although March started late, there being an extra day in February this leap year, there&#8217;s been lots going on.<\/p>\n<p>In the first week heavy winds brought down trees which then needed to be cleared.\u00a0 This was an extension to the normal logging routine which is coming to an end as summer approaches.<\/p>\n<p>Cousins arrived for a gathering.\u00a0 It was a special treat to have so many come over to Ireland to commemorate 100 years since the birth of Joan Brunt (nee Butler).\u00a0 Although it was a short trip, it was perfectly timed to coincide with the weekend that fishing would normally have opened.\u00a0 (There is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fishingireland.net\/fishing\/salmonandtrout\/index.htm\">restricted fishing<\/a> on most rivers with many beats and clubs not fishing at all this year as a conservation measure.)<\/p>\n<p>In the second week of March, our friend Gerry died unexpectedly.\u00a0 It was a shock to me as he has been a good friend.\u00a0 There is a small tribute <a href=\"http:\/\/astraea.net\/blog\/\/?p=377\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And then half term arrived!\u00a0 With a long weekend of St Patrick&#8217;s day festivities to start it off.\u00a0 Our schedule changes a bit during the holidays so that we can do things with the children a bit more and it has been fun playing and working in the garden and woods when the weather has been fine.\u00a0 The pinnacle must have been when our lunatic children went swimming in the river a few days ago.\u00a0 Actually it was very tempting to jump in too, but I think I&#8217;ll wait at least till May.\u00a0 Global warming hasn&#8217;t yet worked its magic on the temperature of the Slaney in spring.\u00a0 Easter weekend was also during the holidays and another excuse for fun.\u00a0 And it was a special treat for us to have my sister visiting to help give the traditional barbecued pascal lamb the appropriate attention.<\/p>\n<p>March saw the spring equinox and the clocks going forward an hour.\u00a0 Signs of spring are now evident all over.\u00a0 Daffodils, camellia are waning, magnolia are blooming, and trees are budding. In a couple of weeks dandelion will be all over. \u00a0 Birds are busy and you can hear them singing the joys of spring.\u00a0 It has been busy in the garden with much preparation of the ground and planting.\u00a0 Onions, tomatoes and broad beans are sprouting and we&#8217;ve planted potatoes, beetroot, parsnip, garlic too.\u00a0 (Praise be for that 2-wheel tractor!)\u00a0 Much more to go in in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The first yoga courses finished and the next round will start again in a couple of weeks.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s another video of <a href=\"http:\/\/video.yahoo.com\/watch\/2228983\/7036029\">mountain biking in the woods on line here<\/a>.\u00a0 And we should have a garden tour video up in a few days.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although March started late, there being an extra day in February this leap year, there&#8217;s been lots going on.
