{"id":344,"date":"2007-12-14T10:33:54","date_gmt":"2007-12-14T10:33:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/astraea.net\/blog\/?p=344"},"modified":"2007-12-14T10:33:54","modified_gmt":"2007-12-14T10:33:54","slug":"no-welcome-surprises-from-the-un-bali-climate-change-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/no-welcome-surprises-from-the-un-bali-climate-change-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"No welcome surprises from the UN Bali climate change conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As expected the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/sci\/tech\/7143613.stm\">US remains stubborn in its refusal to share the burden of tackling climate change<\/a>.\u00a0 The country that has benefitted most from the consumption of oil over the past 100 years remains <a href=\"http:\/\/astraea.net\/blog\/?p=313\">addicted<\/a> to its drug, despite the fact that its use is crippling the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.astraea.net\/about\/dtrttrw.html#biosphere\">biosphere<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As the UN climate change conference enters its last day US delegates spout homilies about sharing and partnering but refuse to take responsibility for their own behaviour.\u00a0 They are fearful of the pain of withdrawal, and rightly so &#8211; cutting back a junkie&#8217;s supply is excrutiating for the subject, especially if they are in denial.<\/p>\n<p>However, a change is inevitable.
