{"id":2949,"date":"2016-08-25T09:25:18","date_gmt":"2016-08-25T09:25:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/astraea.net\/blog\/?p=2949"},"modified":"2017-01-24T13:26:04","modified_gmt":"2017-01-24T13:26:04","slug":"snack-food-slavery-were-all-enjoying-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/snack-food-slavery-were-all-enjoying-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Snack Food Slavery: We&#8217;re all enjoying it."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What?\u00a0 Not me.\u00a0 No way!\u00a0 Slavery is bad.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, but &#8230; you&#8217;re still part of the problem.\u00a0 We all are.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a piece of the big picture puzzle:<\/p>\n<p>Soda and chips &#8230; sugars and fats &#8230; vegetable oil &#8230; palm oil &#8230; slaves and rain forest exploitation.<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/palmoilslave.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2959\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/palmoilslave.png?resize=214%2C290\" alt=\"palmoilslave\" width=\"214\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That food chain is run by big companies, big banks and rich owners.\u00a0 (You might be one without even realising it!)<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s fuelled by people buying foods made with industrially grown vegetable oils.\u00a0 That means most products on the supermarket shelves, including all the big brands owned by companies like Nestle, Unilever, Pepsico, Heinz, Cargill, CocaCola, Kraft, P&amp;G, &#8230;\u00a0 And the food chain is financed with money from big banks like Citi, HSBC, JP Morgan Chase, Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas, Standard Chartered, Mizuho, Rabobank, &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->So, if you buy products from those companies or have money deposited with those banks, you&#8217;re helping fund the slavery food chain.\u00a0\u00a0 You don&#8217;t want to but that food chain requires people to harvest and carry 2 tonnes of palm nuts for about \u20ac5 every day.\u00a0 That&#8217;s slavery.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-video\" data-allowfullscreen=\"true\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/rainforestactionnetwork\/videos\/10154298408210960\/\" style=\"background-color: #fff; display: inline-block;\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What can you do about it?\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard.\u00a0 We all support the pyramid of power.\u00a0 It&#8217;s pretty hard to live in this world without being part of the system.\u00a0 I&#8217;m part of the system, even if I don&#8217;t like it and I want to change.\u00a0 So take a step in the right direction.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Be aware.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Share the knowledge.\u00a0 Your voice helps accelerate change for good.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Buy less snack food.\u00a0 Eat locally grown food.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Make your bank aware that you know they fund this pyramid of human slavery and you don&#8217;t like it.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Do the right thing the right way.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See: <a href=\"http:\/\/astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/The_Human_Cost_of_Conflict_Palm_Oil_RAN.pdf\">The Human Cost of Conflict Palm Oil<\/a> pdf\u00a0 by Rainforest Action Network<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What?\u00a0 Not me.\u00a0 No way!\u00a0 Slavery is bad.
