{"id":2605,"date":"2015-01-19T12:58:41","date_gmt":"2015-01-19T12:58:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/astraea.net\/blog\/?p=2605"},"modified":"2015-01-19T12:58:41","modified_gmt":"2015-01-19T12:58:41","slug":"1-own-more-than-everyone-else-by-next-year-a-decadent-milestone-in-the-implosion-of-civilisation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/1-own-more-than-everyone-else-by-next-year-a-decadent-milestone-in-the-implosion-of-civilisation\/","title":{"rendered":"1% own more than everyone else by next year: a decadent milestone in the implosion of civilisation."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/policy-practice.oxfam.org.uk\/publications\/wealth-having-it-all-and-wanting-more-338125\">\u00a0Oxfam research<\/a> shows that the share of the world&#8217;s wealth owned by the richest 1% increased from 44% in 2009 to 48% last year.\u00a0 Each adult on average has $2.7m.\u00a0 On current trends the wealthiest 1% will own more than 50% of the world&#8217;s wealth by 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Today the 80 richest people have the same wealth as the poorest 50%.\u00a0 20% of people (including you &#8211; sorry!) own 94.5% of wealth.\u00a0 The average wealth of the poorest 80% is only $3,851 (\u20ac 3,320) per adult.<\/p>\n<p>The wealth at the top is not just from hard work and prudent asset management.\u00a0 That would at least be honest.\u00a0 Much of it has been accrued through tax avoidance (even tax evasion), collusion, corruption and confiscation by force.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not just the wealthy that cheat &#8211; many people game the system and take housing and unemployment benefit while having jobs &#8211; though of course they are not the bulk of the problem.\u00a0 And overall, humanity has taken too much from nature.<\/p>\n<p>The imbalance will not last.\u00a0 The longer it takes for fairness (not equality) to dominate our systems, the more likely that rebalancing of wealth will occur by violent revolution, destroying much of the wealth, rather than humane evolution which might preserve wealth.<\/p>\n<p>Systems are clearly breaking down.\u00a0 Economic systems remain confusing and stagnant despite at least 6 years of patching.\u00a0 Employment opportunities are shrinking as technology continues to automate production from food, to cars to banking.\u00a0 Everyday there is another report of environmental disintegration, whether from climate volatility, species loss, or water shortage.\u00a0 And people are not any more fulfilled.<\/p>\n<p>System change is still possible and increasingly urgent.\u00a0 Everyone can make a difference by choosing how they invest and spend their money.\u00a0 But those at the top must lead change or expect to be swept away in violence as society disintegrates in the coming decades.\u00a0 This is becoming more certain.\u00a0 The Limits to Growth have been passed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-header\">BBC: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-30875633\">Richest 1% to own more than rest of world, Oxfam says<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"entry-title\">Astraea: <a href=\"http:\/\/astraea.net\/blog\/?p=2501\">Data shows global growth now past tipping point.
