1 <\/strong>Life is like a toilet roll. The closer you get to the end, the faster it seems to disappear.<\/p>\n 2<\/strong> \u201cI don\u2019t know\u201d is the most underrated sentence in the English language.<\/p>\n 3 <\/strong>If you can\u2019t dance by the age of 18, you\u2019re probably never going to be able to dance.<\/p>\n 4<\/strong> You can\u2019t make people be who you want them to be. If you don\u2019t like the way they are, then you\u2019re probably with the wrong people.<\/p>\n 5<\/strong> In January 1962, Decca Records turned down the Beatles in favour of Brian Poole and the Tremeloes. That is all anyone needs to know about rejection.<\/p>\n 6 <\/strong>The social contract between humans and dogs might be the best bit of business we have ever done.<\/p>\n 7 <\/strong>Securitisation means the exact opposite of how it sounds.<\/p>\n 8 <\/strong>Most of us find the middle of the road in the end. Mike Tyson is a vegan. Mick Jagger is doing pilates. Then it was the Sun\u2019s turn. He shone down warmly on the traveller, who immediately removed his cloak. And so the North Wind was obliged to confess that the Sun was the stronger of the two.\u201d<\/p>\n 12 <\/strong>No one has ever sung a song better than Roy Orbison sang Crawling Back<\/em>.<\/p>\n 13<\/strong> The person in the world I would most like to meet is whoever came up with the idea of putting yellow boxes on roundabouts. I feel I would have a lot to say to that person.<\/p>\n 14<\/strong> I\u2019ve discovered that my mother\u2019s advice to me about DIY \u2013 \u201cDo it once and do it right\u201d \u2013 can be applied to hundreds of situations, including marriage.<\/p>\n 15<\/strong> About once a week, I find it helps to remember the words of Subh Milis<\/em> by S\u00e9amus \u00d3 N\u00e9ill. \u201cBh\u00ed subh milis, Ar bhaschrann an dorais, Ach mh\u00fach m\u00e9 an corra\u00ed, Ionam d\u2019\u00e9irigh, Mar smaoinigh m\u00e9 ar an l\u00e1, A bheas an baschrann glan, Agus an l\u00e1imh bheag, Ar iarraidh.\u201d (\u201cThere was jam on the door handle, But I suppressed the anger that rose up in me, Because I thought of the day that the door handle would be clean, And the little hand would be gone.\u201d)<\/p>\n 16<\/strong> Brown to live, blue to neutral . . . Actually, let me check that and come back to you.<\/p>\n 17<\/strong> There comes a point, when you\u2019re staring down the barrel of middle age, when you realise that almost all of the stuff you\u2019ve spent your life amassing is going into a skip when you die. That realisation is very liberating.<\/p>\n 18<\/strong> Never smoking in the first place will save you years of trying to quit.<\/p>\n 19<\/strong> Returning from abroad to discover that someone has put milk and bread in your fridge is to remember how much you missed home while you were away.<\/p>\n 20<\/strong> If everyone stopped to smell the roses, we\u2019d still be waiting for the industrial revolution.<\/p>\n 21<\/strong> To win in love, stop keeping score.<\/p>\n 22 <\/strong>Some advice that my grandfather gave to my father, which has served me well in life: \u201cFind out which way the crowd is moving, son, then run like hell in the other direction.\u201d<\/p>\n 23<\/strong> I am forever shocked by how petty I can be in the battle for the elbow rest on an airplane.<\/p>\n 24<\/strong> In arguments, forget who\u2019s right and remember what\u2019s right.<\/p>\n 25<\/strong> \u201cLet it breathe\u201d is good advice when it comes to wine, cheese and a great many situations.<\/p>\n 26 <\/strong>A cup of tea tastes 40 per cent better if someone else makes it.<\/p>\n 27<\/strong> Sometimes good things come to an end so better things can come to a beginning.<\/p>\n 28<\/strong> A shut mouth gathers no foot.<\/p>\n 29<\/strong> To try to make someone laugh is a very noble ambition.<\/p>\n 30<\/strong> People fought for my right to vote. But they also fought for my right not to vote. When you\u2019ve lived long enough to see politicians come to believe the opposite of the things they once believe in, you realise there is no shame in abstaining.<\/p>\n 31<\/strong> Perfection is something we seek in everyone except ourselves<\/p>\n 32<\/strong> Money is as relevant to happiness as the stock market news is to a chimpanzee.<\/p>\n 33 <\/strong>A doctor told me recently that once you reach the age of 40, you\u2019ve got to start thinking of your body as a vintage car that\u2019s never going to be in factory condition again. All you can do is keep it going as best you can by doing running repairs. Every year I find out how right he was.<\/p>\n 34<\/strong> Arguing with strangers on the internet is like wrestling with a pig on a barnyard floor. No one learns anything and all anyone gets is dirty.<\/p>\n 35<\/strong> This old Irish proverb: \u201cIf you lose an hour in the morning, you\u2019ll end up chasing it all day.\u201d<\/p>\n 36<\/strong> Few things give a man as much of a sense of power as catching a fish or poking a fire with a big stick.<\/p>\n 37 <\/strong>Nothing bad will ever happen in this country that isn\u2019t terrific news for certain middle-class professionals.<\/p>\n 38<\/strong> A day without music is a day without joy.<\/p>\n 39<\/strong> If PG Wodehouse and Damon Runyon were the only authors I ever read, I would consider myself well-read.<\/p>\n 40<\/strong> It is hard to get down off a high horse gracefully. It will save you the trouble of having a midlife crisis later on.<\/p>\n 43<\/strong> It is a healthy thing to take some time out once in a while to laugh at yourself.
