{"id":2378,"date":"2014-09-11T18:20:38","date_gmt":"2014-09-11T18:20:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/astraea.net\/blog\/?p=2378"},"modified":"2014-09-23T20:12:02","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T20:12:02","slug":"is-amazon-destruction-your-fault","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/is-amazon-destruction-your-fault\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Amazon destruction your fault?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sadly, the truth is that we are all to blame.\u00a0 We demand the paper or burgers or whatever it is for which the tropical woods are consumed.<\/p>\n<p>Ok, so you want to deny it or ignore it.\u00a0 That&#8217;s OK.\u00a0 Today.\u00a0 But tomorrow we&#8217;re all going to have to face the truth.\u00a0 Sooner or later we&#8217;ll have to stop.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re rich, you&#8217;ll be protected for longer, but scraping forests off the face of the earth is like scraping off the skin from your body.\u00a0 It might not be your skin, but sooner or later you&#8217;re going to be affected.\u00a0 And the consequences are similar: death.<\/p>\n<p>Now for some of the detail.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/deforestation0120140911.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2379\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/deforestation0120140911-300x168.jpg?resize=300%2C168\" alt=\"deforestation0120140911\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/deforestation0120140911.jpg?resize=300%2C168&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/deforestation0120140911.jpg?w=976&amp;ssl=1 976w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Around five football fields of tropical forest have been illegally cleared every minute between 2000 and 2012 according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forest-trends.org\/documents\/files\/doc_4718.pdf\">new report<\/a>.\u00a0 Consumer demand in Europe and the US for beef, leather and timber is driving these losses.\u00a0\u00a0 And in the first 12 years of this century, 49% of tropical deforestation was due to illegal conversion for commercial agriculture.\u00a0 So we&#8217;re all accessories to that crime.<\/p>\n<p>Brazilian government figures show deforestation of the Amazon rainforest was 6,000 sq km.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the size of Palestine, or more than two Luxembourgs.\u00a0 The rate of deforestation is up by 29% in the 12 months up to the end of July 2013.\u00a0 Deforestation is due to agricultural expansion,\u00a0 illegal logging and the invasion of public lands adjacent to big infrastructure projects in the Amazon, such as roads and hydroelectric dams.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/deforestation0220140911.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2380\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/deforestation0220140911.jpg?resize=624%2C351\" alt=\"deforestation0220140911\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/deforestation0220140911.jpg?w=624&amp;ssl=1 624w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/deforestation0220140911.jpg?resize=300%2C168&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-header\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/deforestationchart20140911.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2383\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/deforestationchart20140911.jpg?resize=940%2C693\" alt=\"deforestationchart20140911\" width=\"940\" height=\"693\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/deforestationchart20140911.jpg?w=976&amp;ssl=1 976w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/deforestationchart20140911.jpg?resize=300%2C221&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-header\">BBC: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-29144568\">Demand for agricultural products drives &#8216;shock&#8217;
