{"id":2239,"date":"2014-04-08T10:00:08","date_gmt":"2014-04-08T10:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/astraea.net\/blog\/?p=2239"},"modified":"2014-04-09T10:33:32","modified_gmt":"2014-04-09T10:33:32","slug":"weird-weather-is-a-symptom-of-worse-to-come","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/weird-weather-is-a-symptom-of-worse-to-come\/","title":{"rendered":"Weird weather is a symptom of worse to come."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The IPCC released the <a href=\"http:\/\/ipcc-wg2.gov\/AR5\/\">second report on climate change<\/a>.\u00a0 It is more very bad news, but even so might still be insufficient to stimulate action from leaders or followers.<\/p>\n<p>Last September\u00a0 a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar5\/wg1\/#.UkU7GYZeY6k\">summary on the physical science of climate change<\/a> showed that climate change is real, and humans are the &#8220;dominant cause&#8221;.\u00a0 Now the IPCC reports that if behaviour doesn&#8217;t change &#8211;\u00a0 i.e. less fossil fuel consumption and less net carbon release &#8211; the possibility of redressing climate volatility will diminish.<\/p>\n<p>The scientists point out that some effects will become irreversible which must be bad.\u00a0 One extrapolation is that crop yields, which are already stretched to feed the world, will decline.\u00a0 If we don&#8217;t reduce consumption now, there will be nothing to consume in a few decades.<\/p>\n<p>It is sad to be able to see the pain in the future, but realise that most people do not.\u00a0 The US Secretary of State said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Unless we act dramatically and quickly, science tells us our climate and our way of life are literally in jeopardy. Denial of the science is malpractice.\u00a0 There are those who say we can&#8217;t afford to act. But waiting is truly unaffordable.
