of Cancer."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Those are the words used by the World Health Organisation to describe the trajectory of the growth of new cancer cases.\u00a0 They predict a jump from 14 million a year now to 24 million new cases per year by 2035 &#8211; about 2.5% growth a year (compounded).\u00a0 That better be faster than the growth of the population (which needs to shrink drastically).<\/p>\n<p>But the point of the descriptive language is to get attention to the causes which we can influence.\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iarc.fr\/en\/publications\/books\/wcr\/wcr-order.php\">The WHO&#8217;s World Cancer Report 2014<\/a> said the major sources of preventable cancer included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Smoking<\/li>\n<li>Infections<\/li>\n<li>Alcohol<\/li>\n<li>Obesity and inactivity<\/li>\n<li>Radiation, both from the sun and medical scans<\/li>\n<li>Air pollution and other environmental factors<\/li>\n<li>Delayed parenthood, having fewer children and not breastfeeding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, the point is to look after ourselves and live less virtual, more natural lives.\u00a0 Cancer, and other big killers, might be a bit random, but you get more out of life if you can run without wheezing &#8230;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2146\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2146\" style=\"width: 168px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/S1370134.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2146 \" alt=\"runner's knees\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/S1370134-168x300.jpg?resize=168%2C300\" width=\"168\" height=\"300\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/S1370134.jpg?resize=168%2C300&amp;ssl=1 168w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/S1370134.jpg?resize=576%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 576w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/S1370134.jpg?w=1728&amp;ssl=1 1728w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 168px) 100vw, 168px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2146\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Apparently this runner&#8217;s knees are over 70 years old!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Those are the words used by the World Health Organisation to describe the trajectory of the growth of new cancer cases.\u00a0 They predict a jump from 14 million a year now to 24 million new cases per year by 2035 &#8211;
