{"id":2028,"date":"2013-12-03T11:21:47","date_gmt":"2013-12-03T11:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/astraea.net\/blog\/?p=2028"},"modified":"2013-12-03T11:31:35","modified_gmt":"2013-12-03T11:31:35","slug":"yahoo-bing-scroogle-scraper-and-anonymous-search","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/yahoo-bing-scroogle-scraper-and-anonymous-search\/","title":{"rendered":"Yahoo, Bing, Scroogle, Scraper, and anonymous search"},"content":{"rendered":"<p itemprop=\"name headline\">How embarrassing!\u00a0 I knew it, but forgot it.\u00a0 But luckily was reminded yesterday that Yahoo doesn&#8217;t offer search any more.<\/p>\n<p itemprop=\"name headline\">In mid-2009 Yahoo gave up on search and contracted with Bing to supply teh service.\u00a0 I was reminded when I saw the confession at the bottom of a Yahoo search page.\u00a0 Further investigation reminded me that Microsoft now runs Yahoo search.\u00a0 Yahoo keeps 88% of the revenue on ads that appear on Yahoo sites, but Microsoft gets the data on computer users&#8217; online search and buying habits.\u00a0 Microsoft lost its morality long ago so there&#8217;s no doubt that the data acquisition is as insidious as Google&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p itemprop=\"name headline\">So immediately the Yahoo search box was removed from our site and replaced with a private search engine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ixquick.com\">IxQuick<\/a>, and also replaced the default search engine in my browsers.\u00a0 Fortunately there&#8217;s and add-on for <a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/search\/?q=scroogle&amp;appver=&amp;platform=\">Firefox<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/seamonkey\/search\/?q=scroogle&amp;appver=&amp;platform=\">Seamonkey<\/a> to do that.<\/p>\n<p itemprop=\"name headline\">You could also put a scraper on your browser like scroogle, which removes personal info from searches.<\/p>\n<p itemprop=\"name headline\">Users have been persuaded that if the search engine knows your history it will deliver better results, but that is unlikely.\u00a0 If you are searching for something teh terms you use and teh popularity of sites in aggregate are more important that you personal preferences, especially for more unusual searches.\u00a0\u00a0 For example, if you usually browse entertainment sites, but then do a search on construction technology, you want results for construction technology, not results that are biaised by entertainment preferences.\u00a0 Google, Bing and others want your search history to sell you stuff which you are not even looking for (since that was not the purpose of your search).<\/p>\n<p itemprop=\"name headline\">Don&#8217;t get scroogled, just search.\u00a0 Go to another engine like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ixquick.com\">ixquick.com<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.search.com\">search.com<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/wwww.dogpile.com\">dogpile.com<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webcrawler.com\">webcrawler.com,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.duckduckgo.com\/\">duckduckgo.com<\/a> or put a <a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/scroogle-ssl-search\/\">scraper<\/a> on your browser.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/hub.video.msn.com\/embed\/a39a6347-fc86-49cf-9e6d-405c3baa2438\/?vars=Y29uZmlnTmFtZT1zeW5kaWNhdGlvbnBsYXllciZzeW5kaWNhdGlvbj10YWcmZnI9c2hhcmVlbWJlZC1zeW5kaWNhdGlvbiZsaW5rb3ZlcnJpZGUyPWh0dHAlM0ElMkYlMkZ3d3cuYmluZy5jb20lMkZ2aWRlb3MlM0Zta3QlM0Rlbi11cyUyNnZpZCUzRCU3QjAlN0QlMjZmcm9tJTNEJmxpbmtiYWNrPWh0dHAlM0ElMkYlMkZ3d3cuYmluZy5jb20lMkZ2aWRlb3MmY29uZmlnQ3NpZD1NU05WaWRlbyZta3Q9ZW4tdXM%3D\" height=\"180\" width=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How embarrassing!\u00a0 I knew it, but forgot it.\u00a0 But luckily was reminded yesterday that Yahoo doesn&#8217;t offer search any more.
