or &#8220;Gross National Product&#8221;, and both are reported as\u00a0 aggregate and per person data.\u00a0\u00a0 There are complexities to GDP calculation, but it is the number politicians, investors and others point to when comparing national performance.\u00a0 Although it seemed to be an all encompassing data point, GDP is a sterile number and does not indicate quality of life, prospects or externalities which impact the world.\u00a0 These weaknesses have been ignored perennially because it is inconvenient to have to develop new ones.\u00a0 But these are needed.<\/p>\n<p>There are alternatives.\u00a0 Calvert-Henderson <a href=\"http:\/\/ethicalmarketsqualityoflife.com\/\">Quality of Life Indicators<\/a>, an analysis of twelve dimensions, has been a useful standard for many years now, but remains underutilised by developed economies and communities.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genuine_progress_indicator\">Genuine Progress Indicator<\/a> is a direct competitor to GDP developed since the late 1990s.\u00a0 It attempts to include environmental and social factors which are ignored by GDP.\u00a0 In the late noughties the EU initiated development of new metrics &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/beyond_gdp\/index_en.html\">Beyond GDP<\/a>&#8220;, though that is still on the drawing board.<\/p>\n<p>Though we see GDP growth , other measures paint a more sanguine picture and draw attention to the pollution of environment and society that is not included in standard measures.\u00a0 These other measures are another warning that humanity needs to change its priorities if it is to provide space for nature to regenerate and our home, Earth, to survive in a state fit to support people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ethical Corporation: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ethicalcorp.com\/business-strategy\/gdp-v-gpi-%E2%80%93-what-price-progress?\">GDP v GPI \u2013 What price progress?<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Economic statistics are a critical tool for managing the complex world we live in.\u00a0 The principal indicator has been a measure of national income, &#8220;Gross Domestic Product&#8221;
