{"id":153,"date":"2007-09-06T06:05:50","date_gmt":"2007-09-06T06:05:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/astraea.net\/blog\/?p=153"},"modified":"2007-10-16T07:56:49","modified_gmt":"2007-10-16T07:56:49","slug":"enlightenment-of-education-in-france-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.astraea.net\/blog\/enlightenment-of-education-in-france-too\/","title":{"rendered":"Enlightenment of education in France too?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dynamic new French President Nicolas Sarkozy has added his voice to the calls for education reform.\u00a0 Like those of Gordon Brown and his team in the UK change is desired.\u00a0 Sarkozy sent a 30 page letter to teachers to catalyse change.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/world\/europe\/PrinterFriendly.cfm?story_id=9769433\">The Economist notes his laments<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>not enough respect or authority in the classroom (pupils, he says, should stand up when the teacher enters); too little value placed on the teaching profession; too little art and sport in the curriculum; too much passive rote-learning; and too much \u201ctheory and abstraction\u201d. France, the president concludes, needs \u201cto rebuild the foundations\u201d of its education system.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is good that education method and infrastructure is reviewed and improved, but it will be a challenge to actually make changes simply because the incumbent system is inflexible and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pedagogy#Pedagogists\">pedagogists<\/a> have little agreement on how to enhance methods.\u00a0 Sarkozy&#8217;s intentions are, however, in the right direction.\u00a0 We reiterate our support of natural education systems (such as those espoused by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johann_Heinrich_Pestalozzi\">J. H.
