ideas for educating ourselves
Education is about learning things. And learning to think.
This is a great introduction from Wikipedia.org.

| Education encompasses teaching and
learning specific skills, and also something less tangible but
more profound: the imparting of knowledge, good judgement and
wisdom. One of the fundamental goals of education is to impart
culture across the generations.
Overview
Education begins the minute a baby
is born and is life-long. Education may even begin before birth
as evidenced by some parents playing music or reading to the baby
in the womb in the hope it will influence (educate) their child
before birth. For some, the struggles and triumphs of daily life
are far more instructive than formal schooling (Thus Mark Twain:
"I never let school interfere with my education.") Family members
have an educational effect which is quite profound — often
more profound than they realize — though family teaching
techniques may be highly informal.
Formal education occurs when society
makes a commitment to educate people, usually the young. Formal
education can be systematic and thorough, but the sponsoring group
may seek selfish advantages when shaping impressionable young
scholars.
Life-long or adult education has become
widespread. Many adults have given up the notion that only children
belong in school. Many adults are enrolled in post-secondary education
schools, both part-time and full time, where they are often classified
as non-traditional students in order to distinguish them administratively
from young adults entering directly from high school.
Computing devices can change when and
where we learn. This is the computer based or networked learning
structure, in which people contribute to each others' education.
It is defined as online education (a subset of distance education),
the European Graduate School as a University operates during the
summer, it serves as a meeting point for people that has participated
in online forums through the academic year, this methodology is
a break to the traditional educational system. |
Our approach to learning favours a natural approach with appreciation
of anthropomorphic analogy and biomicry. It draws on the example of one
of the founders of modern education, Johan
Heinrich Pestalozzi, 1742 - 1827. Pestalozzi offers a comprehensive
foundation in natural learning, aptly summed up by the motto "hands, head,
heart". Pestalozzi sought to enrich ones physical abilities, mental aptitudes
and ethical enlightenment, advocating an experiential approach which nurtures
the natural human abilities present in us all.
In our practical courses, our approach is simple:
-
Teach to think, rather than teach facts.
-
Focus on key ares: basic skills and areas of knowledge.
-
Include everyone: don't lower the goals for anyone, everyone can
achieve a high standard. Use practical benchmanrks: measure performance
based on the individual .
-
Create a nurturing environemnt: values of trust, decency and reliability
should be demonstrated by everyone.
-
Involve everyone: coach don't lecture. Inform rather than instruct.
Here on the web, we can only introduce you to some technical ideas that
we hope will stimulate more browsing.

Socrates said it
all. He was millenia ahead of his time and still today we are learning
to use the Socratic method of enquiry in to ourselves.
J. H. Pestalozzi
changed education for all at a time of natural enlightenment, though it
is only in recent years that his ideas are beginning to be emulated on
a wide scale.
Rudolf Steiner
extended understanding of human development and the interplay of body,
mind and spirit in the early part of the 20th century. The area of anthrosophy
now has a wide enthusiastic following and particular approaches to education
are espoused by the Waldorf schools. (A
